ADR or STGO

So I’ve got my C+E booked up for next month and truthfully all this talk of RDC’s, drivers waiting rooms and the fact as of next month it’ll also be a year since I passed my cat C the novelty has worn off and I’m a bit bored of driving.

Looking into making the best of what will probably be my life long career now, STGO appeals more to me! But what pays better? I haven’t yet looked into STGO but I know with ADR you have to refresh every so many years is this also the same with STGO?

Totally different animal

Stgo is the lorry not the driver

You’ll struggle to get a start on STGO as a new pass I reckon.

Get in a place moving small plant, genies, forklifts etc who also do 3rd party work and that should be good training.

ADR sometimes pays more for tankers, but you’ll likely need more time on your licence to get into that as they are very expensive if you damage a tank. Might be worth getting it on pallets then move onto tankers (not petrol as they no good anymore).

STGO - only truck and trailer related, but unless you’re in with the right people, not a chance on new licence. 44T is hard enough, more than that takes a lot more knowledge like securing very large heavy stuff. Suspect this might pay more but likely less time actually driving and a lot more sitting around.

Personally I’d get a few years under your belt then look around to more specialist stuff.

If STGO is your goal prepare yourself for plenty of time away from home.

Concider where you live adr is better money if your on fuel but no pount if your not in an area that is close enough to a terminal adr on general dont pay much more at all stgo I no little about

I think the closest place to me would be stockton/middlesbrough I live just off J61 A1m.

You dont get an STGO card although you probably should attend some awareness training (very vauge) which will likely be given by employer.

This gives the specs of what is and isn’t STGO. Every job will be different and training should be given. When you’re dealing with this stuff you cant get it wrong.

You’re quite right, it’s specialist stuff, and interesting too (plus hard work sometimes).

I remember years ago, arguing with an Irish cop that STGO was valid in The RoI. He said it wasn’t. I asked him what regs my load came under, and (beside the point) what was the height limit anyway. Obviously, it wasn’t valid, but my luck being what it is, I found the only jobsworth cop for miles :unamused: We sorted it out in the end, with the “help” of a local haulier…

Give Metcalf farms a ring, 2weeks away, possibility of TV stardom, Do a lot of agricultural stuff, and mod work.

Metcalf seem to do a lot of cranes or crane parts (those too big to move themselves) and often parked bear one of our depots overnight. Not sure anything more than the low loader is STGO.

Maybe another entry point would be people who move cherry pickers and similar. Not STGO but gets you used to chaining them down and having an overhang.

One thing to consider it that ADR training (assuming your training provider is registered for it) will count towards your CPC and should give you about 28 hours of the 35 hours required.

We have to do CPC training so may as well get something tangible from it, I can’t imagine the typical CPC course I’ve done over recent years would seen by any employer as having any value for them. Typical ADR courses near me were about £400 last time I did one, compare that to the £70 to £80 I’ve been quoted per day of periodic training.
