Pheasant!!!!!

Is it me, or are pheasants this year being more suicidal…?

I’m up to (now), ■■■■■■■■ 7 in just the last 2 weeks! :imp:

How many windscreen have they broke

Look what one did to me last year. Wish he’d hit the screen really as gaffer hasn’t replaced this yet. I can’t even find one on line to price.

The male ones at least seem to try to get out your way.

It’s the female pheasants I don’t understand. The mad f****rs just sit there in the road, taking no notice of the massive truck rumbling towards them.

If the worst does happen…at least your have something for xmas.dinner instead of a turkey

I loved them when I used to drive a transit , the sods would stay in the middle of the road I would drive over them then hear a thud as they got hit with the engine support bar which was 3” thick [emoji23][emoji23]

Big windscreen = big target.

That was to dodge the second one! Boss was very sympathetic

Seriously though it wasn’t mine, just one of a number we’ve had over the last few weeks. Curiously they’ve all been impacts at the top of the screen, any further down they seem to bounce off. However as our lorries are specced by beancounters they saved money by not having sun visors fitted as standard. Not sure of the difference in price of visor v windscreen though.

Hi Guys, the reason these Pheasants appear to be stupid is because they are purpose hand reared from chicks in captivity in the spring /summer and kept well fed etc ,they are released this time of year into the wild in large numbers in country areas and are 'lost ’ as it were - ready for the winter shooting season ,they have never seen a road /cars /trucks before so are sitting ducks for so called ‘sportsmen’ who glory in their trophies for Xmas.

The first year I started driving in North America everything was new and fun and different. I was driving along at 65 on a nice spring morning when I saw 4 wild turkeys on the verge in front of me, I suppose eating and staring about as they do.

I know they can’t fly, so I was just enjoying watching them, they are quite colorful actually, when the one nearest the road taught me that they can in fact fly quite efficiently and indeed can take off at about a 40 degree angle. She got to the middle of my lane at windscreen height very quickly, too quickly for me to react anyway, and hitting a 20lb bird at 65 made a noise that freaked me out completely but luckily it hit right on the curve of the window at its strongest point and didn’t break the screen. I’ve not trusted one since I can tell you.

I read later that summer of a driver in Quebec who hit one square on and it came right through the screen spraying blood feathers and ■■■ all around the cab as it ran and flew about while taking an age to die. Made quite a big insurance claim getting it all put right.

Scum balls worthy of burning at the stake. If theres a more handsome creature in our countryside than the pheasant,I ain’t see it.

What about pigeons? They are just as suicidal. I often wonder how come crows are so much more switched on when it comes to traffic. They even seem to know they are safe on the hard shoulder!

Can anyone beat my Pheasant experience …

Before the A14 was made I was going A47/A1/A604…A11 towards a Thetford delivery
Whilst on the A1 a pheasant lifted off from the central reservation and collided with the ERF rigid I was driving
A few feathers flew about and I carried on until I got to Thetford

On arriving the forky said - I like your mascot - and on looking there was a dead pheasant in the centre of the grill with its neck broken and its arse jammed in - it did look like it had been placed there deliberately

Got it out - nothing broken - apart from the pheasants neck - bagged it up then took it back to depot where a colleague took it home and had it for dinner

I was driving for CJ Upton steel at the time

The pheasants were probably released late August/early September and the feeding will continue right through the shooting season. The idea is that it keeps the birds where they’re meant to be i.e.the land on which the shooting takes place. Essentially pheasants and any other of the ‘reared’ game birds are a food source, shooting is just the method of despatch, arguably more civilised than a slaughter house/abatoir. Bizarrely, the shooting of the pheasants pays better than the what they’re worth as food - Imagine paying £500 to slaughter a cow and getting £50 for the meat!!!

For many farmers the shooting rights on their land provides a valuable income stream that may just be helping to keep their heads above water, whist we can buy milk and the like, at under cost price!!
I don’t partake in game shooting myself but, I know a few who do and believe me shooting game is nothing like shooting sitting ducks. You have to be good with a shotgun and there are ‘rules’ to be followed, anybody taking the easy shots just for the ‘fun’ of killing will certainly be escorted from the shoot and not be welcome back. As for trophy shooting, pretty well eliminated from the game shooting scene I would think, perhaps someone who knows about taxidermy would be able to qualify that.

Couldn’t agree more about the pheasant being a handsome bird but, ironically, would probably disappear from the countryside if shooting were banned. They’re not a native species and shoots go to a lot of effort to create a suitable environment for them. Once the shooting stops there’s no new stock being brought in, habitat maintenance stops and eventually as a ground nesting bird the classic predators - foxes, magpies, jays, rooks, crows, jackdaws and the birds of prey will soon wipe out the rest of the population.

There are no doubt a few despicable creatures that go pheasant shooting, same as there are that go to football or out drinking on a Friday/Saturday night. Burning at the stake should be reserved for those, whatever their favourite pastime might be.

Said it before but I’ll say it again … I prefer my grouse to come out of a bottle … :frowning:

Running from Kirkwall to st margrets hope to get the ferry back (about 5 hours to do it so ‘must make the boat’ switch not engaged) [emoji23] in a 4 series scania when a seagull hit the screen then got wedged upside down under the sun visor. I couldn’t stop straight away so had to keep going with it dangling there, I think looking at me. Very disturbing. Eventually it dropped out and presumably got squished.
