28 July Bridge strike M6 Closed jnc 32-33 Galgate both ways

Bridge has been declared structurally unsafe.

Driver ok just in hospital according to updates.

How can that bridge be unsafe, it’s got a Volvo holding it up.

Not going to be a quick fix either. this will mean major work.

And a massive insurance claim…

Preston to Galgate. about 12-14 miles? Thats a big chunk of Mway to go around.
The A6, only reasonable alternate route, is going to suffer bigtime.

Last update was probably mid afternoon at earliest to get props in place, then they would probably have to hard armco and hard shoulder closure and pos lane 1 like they did with the bridge the trucker did exactly the same to just north of inc 19 a few years ago.
They eventually took the bridge down but I think that was only an accommodation bridge with a footpath.
That looks a bit like a road bridge??

Google maps is showing
solid red from inc 34 south so that’s a heck of a crawl just to diversion.

Northbound solid pretty much anywhere north of the M65 on the west side of the country.

2 things. 1 is the driver OK cos that is some hit and 2 how did Sodbrats get out so quick to respray the truck and trailer?

First post says driver in hospital but OK.

That is an expensive trailer to write off.

Driver to spend night in hospital according to local paper.

Bridge a mess…

Wagon wheel biscuits now in all motorway police cars…

Preston is slowly getting gridlocked. As folk divert off at 31 and 29.
Gonna be a slow hot day on the divert

Trouble is, as soon as you get on the A6 at Preston there´s a set of lights at Broughton. That is SERIOUSLY going to slow it down. After that it´s pretty much a chug along for the next 12 miles or so, back on at J33.

Miles of motorway and yet people hit bridges.

That’s very unfair, this guy’s truck has left the motorway for a reason that none of us know. Unfortunately he left the road just before a bridge and hit the supports, the consequences of which are massive compared with just getting stuck in the verge.

The A6 is nowhere as bad as it used to be now since the new bypass around Broughton opened last year.

Glad drivers ok,gotta be impressed with how that Volvo’s stood up to the impact though!

from other sources , apparently there is dashcam footage from a following vehicle, showing that a blowout caused him to hit the bridge…
very lucky to walk away from that …
hope he buys some lottery tickets at the weekend.

A6 isn’t fairing too well at the moment.

.

As is the normal nowdays, massive over reaction when the elf"s n Safe show and their face, panic panic, as long as nothing is going over that bridge, it’s fine, or even open the other lane so it can get on.

Its got a big crack in the support, you can see it in the photo. If that lets go which could be caused by the vibrations of passing vehicles or even the bridge itself as it expands and contracts with the heat the whole bridge is coming down, not just one side of it.
