NSE had 112 trucks ceased over the weekend with Romanian drivers !!!

I suppose being in Belgium we don’t really see the reports, but interesting reading thanks.

Put it through Google translate.

112 Slovak trucks were seized on Sunday during a coordinated action against social dumping in the North Sea Express transport company in Zeebrugge. This company often calls on many Romanian drivers who complained about their working and living conditions during their hearing. “They are modern slaves,” says the socialist union UBT.

In last night’s action, the Romanian drivers present were questioned by the investigators. “It became clear that these drivers did not agree with their working conditions and that they required urgent intervention,” explained Filiep De Ketelaere, the work auditor.

The court will now consider whether the company has been guilty of social dumping. This means that this company has systematically circumvented its social security obligations in Belgium. “This creates unfair competition with companies that respect the rules,” adds Filiep De Ketelaere.

John Reynaert of the UBT socialist union went on the scene and spoke with Romanian drivers. “They are really treated like slaves here: they have to live and work for months in their truck, drivers do not know what to do, or whether they will be paid today.”

The truckers who were on the road received a message on Sunday morning informing them of the action being taken and telling them not to go to the company car park in Zeebrugge.

According to John Reynaert, this is a common phenomenon: "Belgian carriers are very resourceful when it comes to reducing their costs, they start businesses in Eastern Europe and bring East at low cost by minibus, these truckers must then live like slaves and live for months in their truck "

Thanks Muckles.

I thought i had posted the link with the translated version.

Bloody paper boy is late with my Belgium Daily News again!

id assume they would know the wages and conditions before they jumped onto the flipflop express over to belgium.nobody would be forcing them.
theres plenty work here 30 days on.a lift to dublin airport,a quick ryanair to wherever for 7 days, then back for another straight 30 days.they get £10 a day less than the indiginous tang.

Some here call unions but proof they are needed now as much as they ever were.

Few years ago the company i worked for used to bring in some EE transporters to help with the UK seasonal car volume increases.
What they didn’t bargain for was the union insisted that these EE drivers would be paid the same as the UK drivers (our pay included load and delivery bonus not purely hours), these EE lads must have thought they’d won the lottery, make a year’s wages in 2 months.

I like the way they call the union ‘socialist’ in the article, does that mean that other unions are pure conservatives :bulb:

How many people have been to job interviews and promised this and that, only to find the reality is far different?

Yep, and that’s where you all speaka the same lingo and all have an idea of the law of the land.

The several mature EE lads who have landed good full time jobs at my place arn’t going anywhere, they appreciate what they’ve landed, they do the job properly, don’t expect the pick of shifts till they’ve done they due time on the shifts you have to take to get a start here, they don’t take the ■■■■ via sickies or try to worm their way out of second runs via the defect routine or other known methods, not saying all EE’s are good or that all have worked out or are any better bets than equivalent non work-shy natives.
Give them a good secure job and they are making fine family oriented respectful citizens and very loyal employees.

I suspect that the Romanians knew the score, they’d be in touch with other drivers.

However, the guys are desperate for work and will take what they can get - no idea about the Romanian benefits system but I’m pretty sure it’s nowhere near the level of ours, so the choice is take the best offer. And the other point is that you are treating people in Europe ( them being E EU doesn’t come into it) pretty badly. I’m guessing they aren’t being being paid for weekends, and all sorts of other things that we might expect to some degree. And all it’s doing is a. cutting West EU wages and b. susidizing the consumers who don’t want to pay a bit more for their goods, at least half of which are hardly life enhancing.

I should think their choice of work has more to do with potential higher earning than the average in Romania than needing a job. As for knowing the score?
They might talk to drivers, but you know what driver talk is like, no doubt some driver wanting to them to believe he on a good thing told them his top line, but forgot to mention that other weeks he might be sat for days on end, only getting the basic Romanian wage in a Country where they can’t afford to buy anything.

But you’re right the system that allows free movement between economies with such massive differences in average incomes, is great for the Multi-National companies and those highly paid people who can get cheap labour, but not good for your average worker, it also can’t be good for those countries that lose their best workers to richer countries, including many highly qualified people who find it better to do a low skilled job in another country.

The EU recently introduced new regulations for posted workers, that is those working for a company not based in the Country they’re working in, but they exempted the transport industry from these regulations.

I wouldn’t argue with you muckles per se, but I think it will be on a spectrum on both points.

Many Irish companies treat their drivers like slaves. Many are paid £80 nett for a 15+ hour day

And that also applies to many english companies too…blame the drivers who want to work for that kind of money, personally i wouldnt, but if your in the doodah…then every penny counts and its better than dole money, or nothing at all.

I agree with the spectrum, I’m sure the opinion of the job and reasons for taking it will vary as much with a group of Romanian drivers as it would with a group of British drivers.

Spot on boss! Free movement is a fine idea in principle but your average Joe picks up the tab in terms of higher rents and lower wages. Shame the eurocrats refused to acknowledge that weakness!

I am interested why you call EE driver flip flops? I see this a lot of time. I am from Ukraine but living in UK 10 years (English wife and kid) driving and working all this time and I hear flip flop so much. No one ever explain to me why people are saying this

Many of them seem to wear flip flops or crocs all the time. Along with other horrendous fashion items…

Only time I’ve seen drivers wear flip flops over here in the rain were Spanish on oranges for Mazo etc or some fat bloke from pontefract waddling to the msa showers. Now tracksuits, tracksuits are a popular choice.
