National walkout?

Having been in this terrible job for almost 20 years and now working more hours than ever for less pay I reckon it’s time WE did something about it. I cannot believe that any driver is seriously happy with the situation. We are basically on minimum wage and treated like the lowest of the low for doing what is an essential service. The working time directive is seen as a target rather than a safety limit and the working conditions are, quite simply, shocking.
I am constantly infuriated by the lack of passion for this topic by almost all drivers I meet. It seems that everyone is more than happy to moan and whinge about it but no one will actually stand up and try to do something. The worst offenders are the guys who do tramping. You lot should work out your hourly rate, you’re basically unpaid security guards.
Until the drivers actually grow some balls and stand up for themselves this situation is not going to change.
I am willing to give up some of what little free time I get to have a go at organising a national walkout. If ALL OF US get together and agree to strike for a week THEY will have to listen. I cannot do it alone. I will no longer work for any company as the wages and conditions are just not good enough. Everywhere I have worked has been the same, the drivers all moan but when I stick my neck out no one EVER backs me up. Only WE can change the situation. Just how far up your arse does your employers ■■■■ have to be before you realise you’re getting forcked?

A petition to the gov won’t work only a walkout will have any effect. I propose setting up a dedicated website to organise this, or maybe doing it on here but I’m not sure of the site rules on that one.

Is anyone with me or are you all happy to be forcked by your employer?

Not going to happen

Bad week in the office, and wifey said no, bit like a dozy Friday post.

For exmply if NFT distribution want increace pay to all staff (warehouse staff plus drivers)for just 1 percent that needed 1 million per years extra. If increace for 50 percent what want drivers that needed 50 million per years. What you think who company simply print this amount of money and all Retair company will agree pay more for distribution???If supermarket up price in store that people start buy less food.If people buy less that less job for drivers and more cost for transport companies.

If only someone would come up with the idea of people working in the same industry to get together.
Maybe they could form some sort of united body? What could we call a group of people from the same trade, in a union?
And those square wheels? Why doesnt someone think to knock the corners off em?

No one is happy to be shafted by bosses, however, people have the option of walking out. Having said that though, many people are not in the position of being able to get HGV driving jobs further afield from where they live. To put food on tables many have no option but to work for the lower end pay scale hauliers. Some are entirely happy under these circumstances, others wouldn’t be seen dead working under what they regard as a decent pay scale.

No matter what you think, and don’t get me wrong, but there will NEVER be a general transport strike in this country. Owner drivers need to pay bills, and unscrupulous hauliers will take benefit of the work that is on offer…with the drivers who need to pay bills themselves.
As much as I feel sorry for all of those on low wages (lower than mine, and I am not on a staggering amount at £10.95 PH but suits me) a strike or walkout will not sort the problems out in this industry…but good luck with your endeavour.

No hope there bud they are too busy shafting each other up the arse to have time to stand together
Then you have [zb] who say they have their own business and just like driving trucks and don’t depend on it or need big money
Then you have the older one’s saying I only have a few years left so i will put up with ■■■■ conditions for last few years
Then you have the young ones starting and they would work for nothing to get experience, can’t be helped
Then you have the one’s who would drive a new truck for buttons because it’s new or bigger than yours
The list goes on and on and on and on and on

I’m quite happy thanks, my employer is an excellent forker.

Countries in enough trouble without another self appointed militant bugger with a personal agenda who wants to drag us all down with them.

If after 20years your not happy with your lot in life then look for blame in a mirror.

Could do a boycott of Kent though, not happy with the anti lorry agenda down them parts.

Anyway best of luck as a tramper myself I love it.

I do some tramping job but i will never carry about load security at nignt. It is no my responsibilty.I sleep at night and all.If somebody will theft diesel from me that i will no contact to this criminal.

It is all true what the op says in reality. It is something that would increase wages overnight that is a guarantee of such an action. The reality is this, some drivers are on a better thing than others, so you can rule all of these drivers out of rocking the boat to gain very little. As the op says, ■■■■ job and ■■■■ wages, well there are lots of drivers who are so weak minded and only too willing to work long hours and for low rates as the job they probably came from was worse than what they are doing now and so they consider this as a better alternative. So rule this group out too. Then there are those who have worked in this industry for a lifetime and are ready to retire anytime soon, probably not interested, You are then left with the few who actually have the balls to do it but won’t because they know all too well you cannot unite HGV drivers. Your left with a handful of good men, this is not enough to change anything other than raise a few eyebrows. Pity but true. Driving was dumbed down years ago and is in such a decline that only a hero like myself could rally up enough support and organise such an event. I could not be arsed either so unfortunately buddy, close but no cigar on this occasion.

Oh and if you just do this job for the money then your in the wrong job, let’s face it any chimp can pass their HGV and claim to be semi skilled when in reality we are just a bunch of lazy buggers who want to play with big trucks.

Minimum wage is to much for most of you as it is…

The industry caters for all sorts, some are happy working all hours, some are happy being away from home doing their own thing, some are happy working nights or shifts, some are happy going home after every shift, some don’t care what they drive, some want the biggest lorry going some just want to be left alone to do their own thing, some take pride in their work some don’t, some want an easy life some want specialised interesting or harder work, and some want the mucky end not cos they’re mucky but they enjoy that side of things for various reasons.
There is a segment of transport to suit everyone.

All of us have a choice as to what we want to do, yes you might have to rough it for a while doing what you don’t want to do when you first start, and then branch out once you’ve got some experience and work record to find your own niche.

There are some very good jobs out there, they won’t be advertised so using one’s noddle is the way to find them and get into them.

You have to invest a bit of time searching out your own niche, however good jobs only stay good jobs because many of the more unreliable or untrustworthy can’t secure jobs there due to poor or lacking history, and the majority of drivers there pull their weight so the job lasts, as in so many things in life you can help to make your own luck in this lark.

Where you live plays its part, always has always will, there are upsides to being where the better work is but there are many downsides too.

oh and calling a national strike is really going to bring the image of lorry driver’s up in the eyes of the general public :unamused:

A first step would be to join the union and to do as much as possible to encourage everyone else to join.

I remember in the 80s during the miners strikes, my old man worked for British Steel in Scotland. They came out on strike in sympathy with the miners. Ravenscraig, Imperial, Dalziel & Clydesdale plants were all picketing. The regular hauliers to those sites also stopped running.
Yuil & Dodds broke the picket lines and anyone who worked in the steel plants to this day still point to a Yuil & Dodds truck and say “There goes the scabs!”.

My point being, there are loads of Yuil & Dodds out there that will cash in on a general strike and the state machine will support them through the fallout afterwards with contracts to keep them going.
If there’s to be any general striking, it would need to be all out or not out. The whole economy would need to be ground to a halt.

20 years of being a miserable goon working for crap companies and too thick to do anything about it, but every other driver in the country should walk out because cement for brains here isn’t competent enough to get a decent job. :unamused:
