Think yourself lucky,initially the highways agency wanted to close the M5 junction 1 to the M6 both north and south completely for 6 months,it was only because locals councils objected that they weren’t allowed to do it as it would of caused absolute grid lock on surrounding roads.
If your journey allows it consider using the toll road.The toll road…for the M5?
If you’re coming from Low enough down the M5 yes,across the M42 pick up M6 Toll brings you onto M6 the other side of Birmingham,it’s a 15-20 min detour but if the traffics bad enough it warrants it,most weekdays you’ll sit in the m5/m6 split traffic for a good hour or so.
Same if your going south on M6,jump on the toll down at jct 12 to M42,across M42 rejoin M5.
Of course this only works if your aim is to avoid Birmingham altogether
