Ca you work whilst you have a sick note

I was under the impression you couldn’t ( insurance etc) so how would you stand if they said they wanted you to do a alternative job , I’m thinking legally , what would happen if you were deemed not fit for work by doctor and accident etc happened

Do you mean signed off sick with a doctor’s note and then working for someone else? Understandably your employer would most likely want your sick pay back and be instigating some sort of disciplinary action against you.
Or if you mean signed off because you can’t do your job because you can’t lift but would be able to file paperwork in the office then it would be very reasonable request and would come under a heading of rehabilitation and phased return.

Not sure this is a serious question but No you can’t work with a sick note under normal circumstances, unless the doctor who gave you the sick note stipulates if there is certain work you can do. Might be light duties, part time etc… all depends on what the sick note is for.

Dozy as far as I i know once you’re on the sick your on the sick, even light dutys classes as work and if you had an accident your not insured.
If I was getting paid bugger going back till the sick note finishes.

You can get a sick note to allow an alternate role to your normal role. You also get paid for your original role.

Depends if he ticked unfit or might be fit with adaptions.

If unfit end of matter unless they want you to go to occupational health at their expense to write a report to overrule your gp.

If it is fit with adaptions and they can make them then you have to do it.

It’s not even Friday.

Why be off sick and work■■? Is it me.

It looks like from the first post the boss wants him in even if he can’t drive to do something else rather than pay to sit at home. Dozy would rather sit at home by looks of things

Occupational health was brought up in conversation , could person do alternative work , present job has lifting of patients / beds etc so after a hernia op apx week ago ( sick note 1 month they’ve said they want to look into alternative roles . It was more so what happens if person has accident when being told they should be resting , and are signed off

It’s family , they’ve had hernia op week ago and were signed off from work for month , told to rest , but they would like them to return to work but maybe in alternative role , I was just interested in aspect of how you would stand legally
I would add person is never off , sick record is excellent , they’ve no issues with that side of things it’s just they’ve short staffed so they’ve said if person can’t do job , is there a role they could fill that would save them getting bank staff in

Ask what the alternative work is,then consult with your Doctor,if he says your fit enough to do the job you have been asked to do,he will sign you off on that proviso
Where I worked a couple of guys had their licences suspended by the TC for heart problems, and went on the sick, after seeing their Doctor and several tests, it was ok for them to do other work until such time the TC deemed them fit enough to drive.

It’s a real struggle to get to see doctor , it can be 2/3 weeks ( now backdating sick notes ) , person was issued with one for a month by hospital and told they must red , supervisor ( boss ) would like them to return and do there job , but if not a suitable role after consultation with occupational health , I think it’s to soon , but as there short of staff I’ve no doubt they’ll soon be back doing there job , but if it is a case they can say you have to come back and do x, y z I just wondered how you stood working whilst you’ve been put on sick and told to rest by hospital

We’ve had this scenario. Had a driver with an injury to his arm, so he couldn’t drive. However, after a certain point in his recovery, the doctor signed a fit note that allowed him to do escorting duties, ie, sitting in the cab looking out at the scenery, usually a van job.

So it’s down to the doctor to authorise someone for whatever duties. If the doctor doesn’t think that someone is capable of ■■■■■■ duties, then it doesn’t happen.

Thanks , seeing doctor is a struggle as can be 2/3 weeks for a appointment , though we could maybe go to out of hours doctor ( hospital ) and get there view on things .
