beacon lights

When is it appropiate to use them other than when on Building sites?
If Im carrying up to max capacity on my truck and going threw country lanes I tend to put them on as well as full lights as car drivers just see the d restriction sign and speed threw the lanes, I want to be seen before a head on?

But sometimes you get other drivers telling you you got them on, yeah I know i got them on, I got a 3 tonne digger and a 1 tonne dumber 4x4 truck on the back and the trucks struggling…

they are amber lights :unamused:

Erm not sure I understand, i linked images not uploaded them so there is no data uses and image is small? I have my own Forum, next to knowbady in my clan uses it or the facebook page I made for our gamming clan bomber-no-620.freeforums.net/ so I think Id understand ?

I think they should only be used if you are hauling a wide or long load or a slow moving vehicle like a tractor I see a lot of plant hire drivers with them on and all they are carrying is tractors and other construction vehicles and they are not oversized or a wide load you don’t have car transporters driving down the motorway with beacons on

loaded and rolling with the load within the confines of the truck area there all off, no one seems to know how to sign a long or wide load these days any way, I was taught all this stuff for nothing,

not going down motorways with them on just narrow country lanes

if not oversize or overlength then they shouldnt be used on country lanes either, only if your stopped and blocking the lane should you consider switching them on along with your hazard reapting lights

Unless the load your carrying causes a hazard to oncoming traffic then theres no reason for them to be on, doesnt matter wether your on the M1 or the B6500 if its not wide or long turn them off

This, it really boils my ■■■■ when you see a 7 and a half tonner with beacons on and bugger all hanging over the sides or the back, same for little transit sized recovery trucks, fair enough when your with a broken down car at the side of the road but please switch them off when moving

To be fair I have used them before when moving the cattle trailer when on single lanes with passing spaces as people can see me earlier over the hedges so seem to pull in earlier.

I even once had them on a low loader trailer flashing away and I wasn’t carrying anything, but that was because I didn’t know how to turn them off.

Just put them on…

They are virtualy worthless because so many folks now use them when not needed that the public ignore them, they stopped being a warning a long time ago, now they are just “look at me lights.”

Because of chaps using them inappropriately those guys that actually need them - slow moving vehicles/ Abnormal loads/ those that need to work or stop on live carriageways are no longer seen as a hazard

As far as Im aware, beacons are really only to be used on site, i.e. when tarmacing, by a recovery vehicle imediately prior to and during recovery, a heavy recovery vehicle during the whole operation, and abnormal loads. Anything else should be deemed unnessesary.

If you are not an abnormal load then you dont need them on, also, if you were a real driver you would compensate for other road uses not he little I have flashing amber beacons look at me.

Wasnt sure so thanks for the replies, used to work and Drive for HHS Hire, they take the beacons a step further with an anoying voice going “Beep Beep, vehicle is turning Left!” and even with just the hazards on “Beep Beep, caution truck” sounds more like Caution ■■■■ (spelt wrongly on purpose)

As a rule, leave them alone unless you are too wide (over 8’6" for example)/too long/too slow. Otherwise people will think you’re retarded. Some people are obssessed with the bloody things, which as Rikki says, has made them worthless

I agree some are obsessed with them ,makes them feel important …When I did DAFaid many many moons ago…if I was escorting a vehicle along the motorway to the nearest services I would have my beacons on as he had a lack of power for whatever reason and I was getting him to a safe place ,generally it was 2 in the morning ,but the amount of people at that time who would flash me or blast their horns was unbelievable …Generally it was a 2 mile journey

You look a ■■■■ with them on when driving all you do is say “look at me I’m pretending I’m pulling an abnormal load.”
You do not need them on moving the dinky toys you describe.
