Being away and distance

It’s my youngest sons 1st birthday today, I was away last night and wasn’t sure if I’d get back today. Which is what got me thinking.

What’s the longest you have been away from home whilst driving ?

Then that led on to the next question. What’s the furthest distance from home you’ve driven ?

For me it’s only been away 4 days, most distance would either be Glasgow or antwerp, which ever is furthest from London

Did a 6 weeks contract driving on Jersey Airport. Missus wasnt very pleased as it should have been 2 weeks and I missed a very important anniversary date lol

Longest away was 3 weeks…And that was a drive to Moscow and back. With some specialised Sony outside broadcasting trailer.

And 5 months living in the truck driving in the North West Territories with my wife before we went back to Quebec.

Ralph Davies and Peter Gilder drivers used to do Kasakstan, and away for months on end, some made it near to the Chinese border, not a RDC tale, then John Mann drivers away in Morocco .
In Italy i Isaw trucks from Jordan and Ukraine .

8+ weeks…

At a time in Europe.

No wife, no kids I was happy to stay out.

2months doing groupage and backloads from Turkey to Norway.
Currently do a week away (sun/mon to thurs/fri) doing 4K km Malaga to Calais/Reims return…

I passed a Ukrainian Merc on the 74 twice this week.

Longest away would be 8 weeks on the boat, landing in Malaig and straight back out.

When the fishing’s good…

A.

I missed my sons birthday last week on Wednesday. God knows what it’s like for the old boys who tramped in the 90s I couldn’t do it without my iPhone and video calling!

I’ve got four kids, and through work I missed out on so many things in the lives of the youngest two: first words, first stand up walk, first birthday etc. and no mobile etc. to catch any of it, but the second two kids I was around for it all and to this day really regret missing out on that experience with the first two kids but work was work to keep a roof over their heads.

Art Exhibition work, one trip in the 90’s with multiple venues took 7 weeks.

6 weeks for me driving all over Europe.

I did this for many years.

seven weeks. :grimacing: did it a few times. thanks. :sunglasses:

Longest I’ve been away was 13 weeks, on a roadshow for Xerox in 1996. The itinerary was Geneva, Zurich, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Warsaw, Moscow, St Petersburg, Moscow (again), Kiev, Bucharest, Istanbul, Belgrade. Three furthest places I’ve been are Tbilisi, Krasnodar and Tolyatti.

When I went to Turkey on a job last year there were plenty of Iranian trucks on the motorway east of Istanbul. How far into Europe do they get to?

In the early 90s I saw a few in Czechoslavakia. Cant remember seeing any further west than that. Twin axle Scanias with twin axle tilts, all on big diameter wheels.

Interesting, thanks. I’ve never seen an Iranian truck in the UK but there are plenty of them in Turkey, and plenty of Turkish motors here, so I wondered how far west they do get. I don’t suppose there is anything preventing them from coming this far.

Thinking back, I recall that there were quite a few Volvos on Iranian plates besides Scanias.

I’ve seen numerous Iranian trucks clearing customs in Dover.

Interesting, I’ve seen a few Russians and the odd Belorussian and Ukrainian motors but nothing more ‘exotic’ than that.

I must admit, after all the stories you hear in waiting rooms I was expecting more.

Was expecting at least 2 of you to have driven to the moon in one hit.
