To service Stanstead, that’s why it’s 3 lanes up to that point. The sections after that were nothing more than an afterthought. Short-sighted 70s government planning saved cash by building this and the M42 as little more than dual carriageways.
It’s yet another sticking plaster on a project that needs ripping up and making into 4 lanes.
