Now thats a tank slapper ! [Merged]

I’ve experienced one on the motorbike & now know what to do, but I’ve never felt one even remotely coming on in a truck.

What caused that? (TNUK CSI awakens) Is it simply poor driving, over reaction, load shift/unevenly spread, high winds or what?

I was once following a artic that swerved violently to miss going directly underneath a bridge jumper, at the first swerve I thought he’d surely lose it, but he managed to get it all under control with just a few wiggles.

Is this something trucks can do, or is purely down to the driver?

I thought he was going to get away without tipping the thing over :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

i am thinking the weight is right over or behind the back axles but could be wrong

In aviation it would be termed a ‘pilot induced oscillation’ - by the time you have made a correction for the previous ‘swerve’, it is already swerving the other way, etc etc etc, which means it is totally controllable with one movement if you understand what’s happening, unlike the chappie in the video!

On a motorcycle tank slapper, physics has taken over & the forces involved make it near impossible for the rider to regain control by using muscle power through the handlebars, the absolute worst thing you can do at this point is “BRAKE”. Ask me how I know that

I can’t imagine physics taking over the steering of a truck !

I’ve had the wheel violently snap one way (hitting kerbs, rocks, tram lines etc, but it has always been easily recoverable.

Is this a case of ‘driver induced oscillation’, is the driver over reacting & swerving to recover from the last swerve, or is something far more sinister involved?

The load is moving inside of that box.

I would agree, some fluid in there may be?

Certainly some fluid in the driver’s pants, I’d have thought.

Looks like he was carrying a giant bowling ball! I bet the driver ran out of poop by the time it went over

I have seen a small rigid (FL6-13) carrying hanging beef fall over after the driver dropped the back wheels off a weighbridge in his yard, he was almost at a stop and the weighbridge was raised above the yard surface no more than the height of a kerbstone, it doesn’t take a lot to get a big wobble on once you go beyond the center of gravity.

It’s like a seriously rubbish go on the dodgems.

I thought the same after the second swerve.

What a knob, he went through all that & still managed to turn him over.

Well boss, the spring rolls are tipped.

I had a tank slapper on my gsxr a few years doing about 100mph, it was banging full lock each way and I could hear the front tyre skidding. It kept going in a straight line, but very wobbly. I closed the throttle gently and prayed, and got away with it. Quick change of underwear and carried on.

A lorry driver and passenger are lucky to be alive after their truck lost control on a bridge in China and swerved violently on two wheels before toppling over and crashing.

The footage was captured on CCTV as the vehicle travelled over a long sea bridge, which joins the island city of Zhoushan to China’s mainland.

The white lorry appears to swerve suddenly to avoid hitting another truck in front. The vehicle rolls onto two wheels, but stays upright, before hitting the central barrier and swerving in the other direction.
