I did that with my kids once. Like an idiot I spent the journey with my head out of the window and my lovely family neglected to tell me I looked like a cast member from the Black and White Minstrel show! :imp:

A loco doing a run-around on my local preserved railway.

There are lots of clips on you Tube about steam locomotives. They required a lot of hard work and skill.

That was his name yes, why you’ve heard of him Harry ?

Yes, I’ve not met him but he’s very well known locally and I’ve been to the Preston Steam Rally on numerous occasions.

Sounds like him, Mike Marshall was his name sadly passed away a couple of months ago aged 80 I think and he built numerous of these 7.25 inch gauge steam engines from scratch
over the years
and was in the middle of building some kind of Foden steam truck when he sadly ran out of time.

He was an extremely talented man and his workshop was crammed with lathes and just about every imaginable tool there was.

Did Conor go visit him as well ?

I need a ‘fix’ of steam trains now and again too.

Here’s one that’s an exhibit at Haven Street Station on the Isle of Wight:

On our way… (Click pic to see full size)

Once we got to Wootton (the end of the line,) the loco gets detached and passes the train to be reattached at the other end for the return journey, so at this point, we’re sitting on a train that has no loco. :open_mouth:
The loco then overtakes:

Some other shots I took that day…

:bulb: I’m going on a much bigger steam train and a much further distance on 1st July, so I’ll be adding some more pics to this topic just after that.

The Isle of Wight had loads of route miles of track until the mid '50s, and they always ran secondhand locos and rolling stock shipped over from the mainland. We’re going to the IOW in about three weeks so I’m hoping to go on the railway. I’ve been on it three times before and really like it but it’s time they pushed to extend it as it seems to go nowhere-Havenstreet-nowhere. Staying at Shanklin so I might even go on the “modern” line which is made up of ancient London Tube trains.

When I live in Scarbro’ I remember the Mallard coming there a few times. I presume that’s York railway museum TB ?

It’s normally kept there but hasn’t been in steam for years ('88 I believe to commemorate 50 years since it broke the speed record). It’s sister engines Bitter, Union of South Africa and Sir Nigel Gresley I think are in working order.
