Spinal stenosis

Just been diagnosed with this and am wondering if anyone knows the general outlook for this condition in relation to continuing hgv work?
Don’t seem to be making much progress with the NHS i have to say, just plonked in endless queues for this this that and tother.Any feedback gladly received.

i was diagnosed with this condition in april last year and was due for the operation last september . unfortunately i developed heart problems and had to cancel , but i am reactivating the process on friday . a young lady i know , 36 years old had it and had the operation , took about 3 months to settle down and she now runs her own cleaning company and is fit as a fiddle . get onto it as soon as possible , hassle your doctor as the delay has left me in severe pain and affects my mobility badly , good luck , dave

Thank you my friend, sorry to hear of your misfortune,I just started a course of chairopractery as a belt and braces approach but i concur with your observation that dogged persistence is the way to go in these situations.Let me know how you get on with your own future treatment Dave.Regs-manalishi.

Pack in driving. Trust me on this. I had lumbar spinal stenosis with two discs in my spine. If you do have the op and continue to drive there is a high risk of damaging the spine again and you’re always going to have issues.

Vertical compression of the spine is the problem and with truck driving we have plenty of that, especially from the drivers seat as the truck bounces down the road. Even strapping down loads with ratchets puts vertical compression on your spine unless your ratchets are like ours and tighten on a down pull.

Read my reply to Steve here. This is what you could be facing.

Most of the reason I’m a miserable barsteward is because I suffer the symptoms 24/7/365. I’m sat here typing this with a stabbing pain in my left hip. It’ll be somewhere else and a different pain this afternoon and in various places throughout the night depending on what nerve gets the pressure as I’m driving.

don’t have to worry about the driving , ( old ■■■■ ) but i agree 100% with the rest of your post . on a longish trip in the car i’m fine until i get out and it takes a while to straighten out , haven’t had a proper nights sleep for ages . never mind , off to the specialist on the 17th and see what happens , dave

Thanks Conor, sobering reading indeed, seems opinion is very divided as to go for the op.I don’t do much in the way of physical graft with containers and opening stiff doors is easily remedied with a large alloy tube, plus truck seats tend to be good at absorbing the impacts of the road compared with cars I would venture, but I will be using your post when I next try to challenge a recent request for surgery that seems to have been rejected, probably due to cost but my condition seems exactly like yours -stenosis with two bulging discs. Thanks again for the response bud.

went to the specialist today and now i have to wait for more scans , not just the base of the spine this time he wants the whole spine scanning before he makes a decision on the operation or operations . ah well , around the end of october or even november before i get an appointment and take it from there . oh the joys of the advancing years . dave
